Week 11 PRIDE Recipient

This weeks PRIDE recipient is Payton.

Payton got her PRIDE award for showing enthusiasm and enjoyment in all her learning. She is an excellent role model of Parkvale PRIDE. Tino pai a Payton !

Crunchy Apples Fractions

Today we ate some super crunchy apples. We cut them into half (1/2) and then into quarters (1/4). Then to show how super clever we are some children cut them into eighths (1/8) which means there are 8 equal parts.

Yumm Yummmm!

Kowhai Trees

We are very proud of how our Kowhai seedlings have grown. Every day we have taken our the seedlings outside so they get fresh air and sunshine and we water them too. Today we got to take our Kowhai seedlings home.

Keep caring for your Kowhai seedlings Room 14 children so they grow big and strong. Remember they need water, fresh air, sunshine and lots of love and care.

Nogard

Today we used our visualising skills to draw a Nogard. Mrs Ramsay read out a piece of text and we had to draw what we pictured in our head.

What is a Nogard?
The nogard is an animal. It has an oval-shaped body. It has a long neck and tail. The top of the neck, back and tail are covered with a row of triangular shaped plates. The nogard's head is shaped like a long triangle. It has big eyes and eyebrows that stick out. It's body is covered with scales. The nogard has four short legs. At the end of each leg is a foot with five toes. Each toe has a sharp claw at the end. The nogard has two wings attached to its body.

A clue: A nogard is usually green but change to a deep purple during the winter months.

Making Paths Using Compass Points

Today in maths we used what we have learnt in position and orientation to make paths.
We had to use groups of blocks that we could skip count. We also had to write compass directions for each new direction we took. Finally, we had to use our skip counting to count up how much our path was worth then we compared numbers to see whose path was worth the most.

Look at this great learning .............

Jordan, Karamea and Janice making paths using compass points
Charlie's path using groups of 5
Caitlin and Hannah checking their directions
Jordan checking her path directions before sharing it with a buddy

Learning To Be Confident, Expressive Readers

WALT be confident, expressive readers. Highway Rats group have been practicing reading to the punctuation and making their reading sound like talking.

Reading to punctuation means we pause (take a very short break) when we get to a comma or full stop. We know that an exclamation mark (!) means we read a little bit louder and with more feeling. When there are talking marks ("speech marks") we can make our voices sound like the character.

We make our reading sound like talking to make it more interesting for the audience. We can make our voices go up and down, slower or faster.

Today, Highway Rats did a great job of reading Little Dinosaur to the class to practice reading to an audience.

Our next goal is to make our reading a little bit louder so Mrs Ramsay can record it to put on the blog for lots of different people to enjoy.

Well done Highway Rats! You showed amazing courage and determination in making your reading sound the best it can be to make it interesting for the audience to listen to.

Fraction Sandwiches

WAL how something can be broken up into equal parts. Today we made a sandwich and then cut the bread up into fractions.

We know that a whole is 1.  1/2 means half and 1/4 means a quarter.

Riley spreading her jam and making sure the whole piece of bread is covered

Ethan spreading the marmite on the whole piece of bread

Jasmine concentrating on spreading her jam - its pretty tricky work
Ayden ready to cut his whole piece of bread into fractions
Balin with his 4 quarters

We used the Visual Poet AP on the IPADs to record and share our learning. We were very lucky to have some digi leaders help us to use the Visual Poet AP.

Check out these great learning stories.....

News Sharing Time

We are continuing to improve our talking and listening skills. We are also learning interesting things about each other.

This week Caitlin and Cahlia shared for news.

Caitlin shared some amazing coral (its a bit tricky to see in the photo). The coral was grey, really smelly and fuzzy to touch.

Cahlia shared a book called 'The Story of Little Mole'. Her Aunty Kath gave her the book. Its a very funny story about a mole who gets up to mischief!

Thank you for sharing something special with us Caitlin and Cahlia.

Super Size Subtraction Map Game

WALA the - sign. We know that - means subtract, takeway or minus. We understand that - means we take some numbers away from a bigger number.

Today we played a super size subtraction map game. We worked in pairs and had 20 counters each. We rolled both dice and then found the co-ordinate on the grid. If the square had a ? card then we had to takeaway the number on the card from our counters. The pair with the most counters at the end was the winner.

Developing Our Oral Language Skills - News Time

WALT develop our talking skills so that we can share our ideas with others.

On Friday's we have started having 'news sharing time' where children can share something that is important or special to them with the class. Children can tell a story or share an item. We know that news time is not a time for toys. The purpose is to develop our talking skills through sharing something special about us.

Today, Ayden and Balin shared.

Balin shared a very special map of Australia. He made a key, using stars, for his map that shows where people in his family live and where his Dad grew up.

Ayden goes to Bay City Tae Kwon Do. He is a green belt and has won many medals and trophies at tournaments. What a dedicated sportsman!

When children are sharing their ideas we can listen and then ask a question. We are learning about the difference between a question and a statement. We use these cards to help us start our questions with an asking word.....

Magic Key Adventures

This week we read the the book The Magic Key by Roderick Hunt. We love reading about the adventures of Biff, Chip, Kipper and Floppy.

We decided to write our own Magic Key Adventures. Check out what these clever authors wrote....

Author Jack wrote:

When I was in bed the magic key started to glow and everything started to look sandy. I was looking around and I saw no trees. I found a camel. It had 1 hump and I found a pyramid to live in. My camel took me to a shady place with water. Suddenly, the key started to glow and I came back to bed and when I woke up the camel was on the back of my bed. He was sleeping next to me !

Author Charlie wrote:

Oh no! I am shrinking and my pocket is glowing. What is in my pocket? I took the key out of my pocket. "Where am I?" I said. "Isn't this the little kids playground?" I said. I started to walk to Room Four. I looked around while I was walking then I heard thousands of children running around me. The ground felt like an earthquake. I took the key out again and suddenly I started to get bigger and bigger and bigger. I felt happy because I was large again.

Author Balin wrote:

When I was sleeping I saw something shining in my eyes. I thought it was my brother turning the lights off but when I opened my eyes I saw a shimmering golden key. Then, suddenly I turned into a colossal giant and I was in Hawaii. I saw chocolate coconuts and so I tried one. They were delicious. Suddenly, I saw a ginormous tiger charging at me then I turned around and saw a spider that looked dark dark black. I was frightened because I didn't want to die. I said, "I need to go home for my delicious dinner." When I got home my mum said, "Where have you been? It's time to go to bed!"

Sound of the Week

Our phonics sound this week is cl as in classroom. Check out the great sound hunt work by Highway Rats reading group.

I Wish A Magic Wish

We have been writing poetry. We wrote I wish poems. Check out what these authors wished for.....

Author Whetu wrote:

I wish I could go under ground.
I wish I could have a chocolate car.
I wish I could be the boss of the school.
I wish I could meet a dragon.
I wish I could fly a plane.

Author Hannah wrote:

I wish I could have a sparkly cat toy.
I wish cats didn't have claws.
I wish it was sunny every day.
I wish I could dance like a ballerina.
I wish I could meet Lynley Dodd.
